Preppy,. From a Uniform to a Vibe!

To be succinct,.and direct. What we know as, and refer to as "preppy" clothing is literally the polar opposite of "workwear".
The difference generally being one of class and social status and offcourse the origins of why the clothing was designed and made in the first place.
Preppy style originated in the early 20th century among students at elite Northeastern U.S. college-preparatory schools and Ivy League universities like Harvard and Yale, as well as the HBCU's the "Historically Black Colleges and Universities"!
The modern phrase "preppy" is not a contemporary way these items and garments described. The more common umbrella term at the time woldve been "College Look" or Collegiate style:.

To contemporary students and faculty between the 1920s and 1950s, these clothes were actually seen as radical, intentionally sloppy, and rebellious—the exact opposite of the rigid, "conservative" reputation the style carries today
Before World War II, proper dress dictated structured suits, starched stiff collars, and hats. When Ivy League students began wearing soft, unlined collar shirts, white tennis sneakers without socks, and oversized sweaters, faculty often complained about the "slouching" and unkempt nature of the student body. Conversely, wealthy students did not want to look like they were trying too hard. They purposefully beat up their leather loafers, let their collar buttons fly open, and wore well-worn Shetland sweaters to project an air of effortless superiority.
The 1970s: The term "preppy" broke into the cultural lexicon via the 1970 film "Love Story," where the working-class protagonist used it to describe her privileged Harvard boyfriend
The 1980s: The aesthetic exploded into a massive consumer trend following the publication of the 1980 satirical best-seller, The Official Preppy Handbook
